The Internet’s Newest Obsession: The Heartbreakingly Sweet Story of Punch-kun
If you’ve been anywhere on social media lately, you’ve likely seen a tiny, wide-eyed Japanese macaque clutching an IKEA plushie like his life depends on it. Meet Punch-kun, the seven-month-old resident of Japan’s Ichikawa City Zoo who has officially stolen—and broken—the internet’s heart.
A Rough Start for a Little Guy
Punch’s story began with a heartbreak that resonated globally. Born in July 2025, he was rejected by his biological mother almost immediately. In the wild, this is often a death sentence, but the zookeepers at Ichikawa stepped in with a creative solution: a surrogate mother in the form of a Djungelskog orangutan plush toy.
The images of Punch wandering the enclosure, dragging his "mom" behind him or burying his face in its fur, turned him into an overnight sensation.
The Controversy: "Bullying" or Biology?
The internet went into a protective frenzy when videos surfaced showing older monkeys snatching Punch’s toy or pushing him aside. While it looked like a scene out of a middle-school movie, experts at the zoo explained that this "tough love" is actually a vital part of macaque socialisation.
For Punch to survive and thrive, he has to learn the complex hierarchy of the troop. The older monkeys weren't being "mean"—they were teaching him how to be a monkey.
The Comeback Kid
There’s good news for everyone who has been losing sleep over this tiny primate. As of late February 2026, Punch is officially making friends.
Recent updates show him being groomed by adult females—the ultimate "thumbs up" in the monkey world. He’s spending less time with his stuffed toy and more time playing with other juveniles. He’s gone from a lonely outlier to a blossoming member of the troop, proving that even with a rocky start, a little resilience (and a really soft plushie) goes a long way.
